Product Description
Specially designed for use in smaller vehicles, the Diplomat from britax is a compact, convertible car seat that's comfortable for baby on long drives, easy for parents to work with and--most importantly!--safe. It fits children weighing five to 35 pounds in rear facing and one year and up to 40 pounds in forward facing, with both positions able to accommodate a standing height of up to 40 inches.

Proper positioning helps keep your child secure in the car, and that's why the Diplomat is chock full of features that ensure your child is seated and strapped in at the safest angle. An easy-turn knob quickly adjusts headrest and harness height without requiring you to uninstall the seat, while the tangle-free, five-point harness ensures a snug and secure fit at multiple heights. There's also a rear-and forward-facing recline option and soft body pillow for child comfort and proper positioning. Convenient belt holders keep the harness to the side so you can comfortably place child in the seat, and premium push-button LATCH connectors provide a quick, simple and tight installation. Finally, built-in lock-off clips tightly secure the vehicle seat belt without the need for additional parts you could misplace.
True Side Impact ProtectionTM and Versa-Tether for Peace of Mind
The Companion also gives you additional peace of mind by featuring engineered True Side Impact ProtectionTM. Deep side walls and head support provide advanced shock-absorption and cushioning in side impact collisions, helping to reduce the risk of injury. Additionally, EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) impact foam lining around the baby's head and torso absorbs energy in side and rear impacts, cradles baby's head to keep it away from protruding parts, cushions violent side to side movements, and creates a comfortable resting spot. Secondly, the rear- and forward-facing recline allows the patented Versa-Tether, an energy management top tether, to anchor the top of seat to the vehicle in the event of impact, thereby reducing movement. Specifically, the Versa-Tether fastens the top of the car seat to factory installed automobile anchor points, minimizing the possibility of a head injury. This system also allows for rear-facing tethering to help keep the seat consistently stable.

When it comes to safety, the Diplomat truly delivers. First, the patented floating HUGS (Harness Ultra Guard) system exceeds U.S. safety standards by reducing forward head movement as it gently cushions the neck and chest with soft padding--a feature that's particularly important both in the case of an accident and during nap time. In addition, this system better distributes the webbing loads, reducing head movement and minimizing harness irritation on baby's neck in case of an impact. HUGS also reduces the chance of improperly positioning the chest clip.
Lightweight at 15 pounds, and measuring 19 x 25 x 23.5 inches (WxHxD), the britax is also certified for air travel. The Diplomat comes with a 1-year limited warranty.
The Diplomat is also available in the following colors: Taylor and Huntington.
Our previous seat was a cheaper $90 Evenflo and it doesn't even begin to compare to the quality of this Britax seat. You can just see and feel how much better quality this thing is. After much research I was impressed with the additional side impact protection this seat provides, compared to cheaper carseats. It is a myth that all carseats are created equal. They all have to meet certain standards but some carseats go well beyond the minimum. I highly recommend this Britax model. The fact that it is more compact in size is a huge plus.
I purchased this seat for use in my G35 which has a very tight backseat. It fits well with room to move the seat back without hitting the child seat. This seat seems to be as comfortable for my son as the larger Boulevard that we have in our other car. (However, my son is on the small side being eleven months old and weighing 17 lbs). I do believe that this seat would probably not be comfortable for a newborn without head control. The side support does not keep my son's head from leaning when he falls asleep and I cannot imagine that it would support a newborn. This is our third Britax seat and we have been very happy with all. They seem to be comfortable and well made as well as consistently rated among the best for safety. This seat does tend to be more expensive than most of the competition but is worth the extra money in my opinion to keep my child safe.
This carseat is wonderful, easy to use and fits great in the car. My baby used to cry all the time in her old carseat, but she barely cries now, probably because she is much more comfortable. I saw some reviews complaining about the smell of the carseat, ours didn't smell at all so I am not sure what that is about. Has a lot of details to help make the baby more comfortable and that is great, I'd definatly buy another Britax.
We had a Peg Perego 30/30 for our son and he hated it from day 1. Every 5-mile ride turned into a drama. He was and is above every 95% percentile and finally when he was 20 pounds we shopped for a new car seat. We first ended up with the Recaro but even though it's a German company there was no way to install it safely in a VW Touareg rear-facing. The problem with the Recaro is the base, which is very high and does not give you enough clearance to get your kid into the seat.
Britax Diplomat was next. With it's relatively small size and base footprint it fits into a Touareg rear-facing. But It's still tricky to install it at the right angle.
However, once it was done it changed our driving experience. Our son needs roughly 300 yards and he sleeps. All in a sudden road trips are part of our life again.
I bought a couple of these seats for our twins based on the other reviews. I am very dissappointed with the seats because the buckle is so large it causes bruising on their inner thighs even with use of the belly pad and with the extra back support removed. I called Britax and unlike some of their other models the Diplomat does not come with any adjustments for the buckle strap length. They also admitted having heard of the issue before but have done nothing to address it. Britax's website says that the lap section of the harness should fit above the thighs but there is no way this is possible because the buckle strap is too short and when the shoulder straps are snapped in the buckle is huge and has hard plastic pressing into your baby at mid-thigh.
So happy I got these seats, as I bought 2! Very sturdy when installed, and it isn't hard to instal or remove! We have a Scion XB (2008 model, not smaller 2006 model) and a honda civic sedan. I initally wanted the Boulevard, but I wanted to buy the same car seat for both cars, and I knew they were very tall! This seat is perfect for both! It isn't too tall in the civic, but provides great protection for our daughter. One thing I wish it had is the "Click and Save" like the new Boulevard! I often worry about her being in there tight enough, but I guess they will make it at a later date!
I would not buy this again for the following reasons.
1 - the Side Impact Protection is a loose piece of foam covered only by the headrest fabric (separate from the cover on the rest of the seat). It can be bumped out of position quite easily. Imagine putting a squirmy baby into a rear-facing carseat in a compact car and you can see that it is easy for this piece to get caught on your elbow or grabbed by the child. In the first 3 days of use, I cracked the foam in 2 places. There is no reinforcement to prevent this from happening.
2 - the concept of adjusting the strap height with a simple knob is a good one, but watch out if you have an older child who likes turning knobs and wheels.... I'm afraid my toddler will one day hurt his little brother by cranking down on that knob too far.
Overall, it is a very safe car seat, comfortable for the child, and a breeze to install. But that piece of foam could use some reinforcement. I can't imagine that I'm the only one with this problem.
We got this carseat for my son after he outgrew his infant carrier at around 8 months. I really like this carseat. After wrestling with the Graco Snugride to get straps adjusted or to do the LATCH system, I really appreciate this seat. It's very easy to adjust strap height by turning a knob. The seat is able to sit up straight or recline a little (we have it reclining). The LATCH system for Britax is great. It's much more like a regular seatbelt fastener in that you push a little orange button to release the catch. None of that fishing around, torturing your fingers trying to get the fastener on and off the anchor. Also, I feel that this seat is pretty easy to use with non-LATCH cars. This model came out shortly before we started looking for a new carseat and I'm glad it did. I have a thin, tallish toddler and he fits very well into this. I like the narrower profile so that it doesn't take up so much room in the car, and it's easier to carry around. We got it on the airplane, forward-facing, very easily. I am especially happy to have the side impact protection and hope that we never need to find out how invaluable it is. It's easy to get my son in and out of this seat and he always seems comfortable in it. The only complaint that I can think of is that it seems very impractical to me that Britax would make a carseat cover that's supposed to be handwashed (we have the Huntington pattern). Like several other reviewers, my son vomited in the car and his seat at one point and I was irritated to have to hand wash and line dry it. It sounds like other people have washed it in the machine and found it to hold up. I've washed a few of the little parts in the machine on a gentle cycle and they were fine, but I'm leary of messing it up and having to fork over $70 for a new cover. That's the only reason I didn't give the seat 5 stars. All in all I'm really happy with this purchase and even as a frugal person, I feel that this was the best choice I could have made.
I was hesitant to spend so much money on a car seat when there are so many cheaper options out there. I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase this particular brand and model. My reasons for buying were the ratings (both safety and user ratings), and the design of the car seat.
I chose this particular model because the Diplomat is specifically designed to fit in cars that have smaller back seats without compromising the safety of your child. I have a 2006 Subaru Impreza and this seat is a perfect fit - we had trouble with some other seats where we really had to move the front seat forward and incline it forward in order to make room for the car seat, which makes it impractial to use the front passenger seat for another person.
Anywhere you look the ratings for the Britax seats are always 4-5 stars, for both the safety and the usage. I found this seat incredibly easy to install and had it in the car in a matter of minutes. I prefer to use the seat belt system rather than the latch, and most other car seats when you want to use the seat belt system you also have to use a locking clip to hold the belt in place which I find very difficult to use correctly. The Diplomat has 2 locking clips built into the car seat on each side and they are very easy to use.
Two other features that I love on this car seat are the extended head-rest pads on the side and the knobs on the sides that let you adjust the straps. The head-rest pads extend much further out on the side than any other car seat I've seen providing extra safety and more support for when your little one falls asleep and their head tilts to the side. The knobs that let you adjust the straps are conveniently located on the side of the car seat and not the back, so you can easily adjust the straps without having to take the car seat out of the car.
We purchased a Britax Roundabout first and while it's an excellent car seat and very similar I like the Diplomat better. It has those few 'extras' like the removable pads, extended head-rest, and strap-adjusting knobs that make it worth-while.
After searching and searching for the right fit, I am very happy I purchased the Britax Diplomat. I first purchased the Britax Boulevard, but it was way too big for my car (Infiniti G35). So, our super girly Boulevard is now in my husband's truck.
The Diplomat has all the positive features of the Boulevard plus the push button release found on the other Britax car seats. The Diplomat is the best combination of the Britax convertible car seats!
I definitely recommend the Diplomat. I could only find the Onyx color online.
